5 Simple Tips To Help Prevent Kidney Stones

Kidney stones can be extremely painful. But the good news is that if you make a few small changes to your lifestyle and diet, you can decrease the chances that you’ll ever get one. Below are 5 simple tips to help prevent kidney stones.

1. Get More Calcium

There are chemicals in your body called oxalates that usually bond with calcium in your digestive tract. But if you don’t have enough calcium in your system, they bond with calcium in your urine instead and form kidney stones. For a healthy dose of extra calcium grab a handful of almonds.

2. Get Less Sodium

A salty diet increases the amount of calcium in your urine for oxalates to bond with. This causes kidney stones the way that a calcium deficiency diet does.

3. Avoid Too Much Salad

Thought you'd probably never hear that one, right? Well it turns out that rhubarb, spinach, and beets contain oxalates and if you love salad with these green on your plate, you’re probably getting too many oxalates. Use different types of greens that are lower in oxalates, such as cauliflower and kale.

4. Eat Less Meat

If you eat more beef and chicken than anything else, you’re at risk for kidney stones. Veggies are a much healthier choice as they have magnesium, which can keep kidney stones from forming.

5. Get Hydrated

It is believed that most kidney stones are caused by dehydration so being properly hydrated is probably one of the most important things you can do to help prevent kidney stones.

Making better choices today will make a much happier you tomorrow.
